Intel chief, Dan Coats, laid out today at the Security Forum in Aspen, Colorado, some sobering scenarios regarding the capability of US enemies to wreck havoc, not only on elections, but also on the electric grid and other critical infrastructures.
What could happen if hackers would be able to hack the electric grid in New England and shut it down for just 3 days in winter time? How many people would die from sub-zero temperatures?
How would the world markets be effected if Wall Street is shut down just for one day?
Coates stated emphatically that it is “undeniable” that Russians are trying to meddle, or “wreck havoc”, in the upcoming elections.
It is as though the US is existing in 2 very different universes. In the one universe, the president Trump is friends with the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, while labeling past allies, including the press, as foes. Regarding the press, he went even further, calling them “enemy of the people”. In the other universe, the intelligence community emphatically and unequivocally keeps insisting that Russians meddled in the 2016 elections in order to help Trump and will do so again in 2018. On second thought, maybe that explains everything.
